Student Leadership
Student Leadership at Greenwood Primary School
At Greenwood Primary School, we believe that every Greenwoodian is a leader. Leadership is not about holding a title—it is about making a positive difference through everyday actions, serving others, and leading with character.
Our Student Leadership Programme is aligned with the school's vision of nurturing Motivated Learners, Critical Thinkers and Leaders of Character. Guided by our WEGR²O values, we provide meaningful opportunities for every student to develop confidence, responsibility and the skills to lead themselves and others.
Rather than focusing only on formal leadership appointments, we believe leadership grows through authentic experiences, purposeful responsibilities and service to the school community.
The LEADership Way
Our Student Leadership philosophy is captured in L.E.A.D. – Lead with Empathy, Awareness and Determination.
We believe that:
-
Every Greenwoodian has the potential to lead.
-
Leadership is developed progressively through purposeful experiences.
-
Leadership is learnt by serving others and making a positive contribution to the community.
-
Every student can grow into a confident leader through guidance, reflection and practice.
-
Through this philosophy, we aim to nurture students who:
-
Lead themselves with responsibility and integrity.
-
Build positive relationships with others.
-
Contribute actively to their class, school and community.
-
Inspire others through their actions and character.
Student Leadership Framework
Our Student Leadership Framework provides a developmental pathway that supports students throughout their primary school journey.
Level 1 – Leaders of Self
Leadership begins with self.
All students develop leadership dispositions through Character and Citizenship
Education (CCE), including our CCE in the Woods lessons where the 7 Habits
of Highly Effective People are incorporated. Through these experiences,
students learn to make responsible decisions, manage themselves effectively,
and develop the habits that help them become leaders of themselves and
understand the kind of leaders they aspire to be, while living out the
school's values in their daily lives.
Level 2 – Leaders of Others
Students begin taking responsibility within their classes through meaningful
leadership roles and collaborative learning experiences. They learn to
communicate effectively, work as a team and contribute positively to class
culture.
Level 3 – Leaders of School
Students who serve as Prefects, CCA Leaders and Peer Support Leaders contribute
beyond their classrooms by supporting school programmes, leading by example
and serving the wider school community. Through authentic leadership opportunities,
they strengthen their confidence, teamwork and sense of responsibility.
Level 4 – Mentors of Others
Members of the Student Leaders Executive Committee (EXCO) take on greater
leadership responsibilities by mentoring fellow student leaders, initiating
projects and working alongside teachers to improve school life. They learn
to influence positively, inspire others and lead with empathy and purpose.
LEAD On – Growing Leaders with Purpose
Our structured leadership development programme equips student leaders
with the knowledge, skills and dispositions to lead effectively throughout
their primary school years.
Drawing inspiration from The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership® by
Kouzes and Posner, the programme develops leadership progressively across
three years.
Year 1 – Building Strong Foundations
Student leaders develop effective communication skills by learning to
listen actively, communicate clearly, build positive relationships and
provide constructive feedback.
Year 2 – Leading Teams
Student leaders strengthen their ability to work with others through project
management and restorative practices. They learn to manage conflicts, solve
problems collaboratively, communicate purposefully and adapt to challenges.
Year 3 – Inspiring Others
As senior student leaders, students deepen their leadership by mentoring
younger leaders, initiating improvements and leading meaningful school
projects. They develop the confidence and character to create a positive
impact within the Greenwood community.
Student Leaders in Action
Leadership comes alive through authentic opportunities to serve.
Throughout the year, our student leaders take on meaningful responsibilities
that allow them to make a difference in their classrooms, CCAs and across
the school. Whether welcoming visitors, organising events, supporting school
programmes or mentoring their peers, they learn that leadership is about
serving others and contributing positively to the Greenwood community.
Through these authentic experiences, every student leader continues to grow as a confident, caring and responsible Leader of Character.
Prefects’ Investiture 2026
The Prefects' Investiture marks the beginning of our student leaders'
commitment to serve the Greenwood community with responsibility, empathy
and integrity.
